About Our Group

The Greenwood Men's Group is a group of men who reside in the Greenwood area and neighboring communities. 

The group originated in January 2020 at an informal meeting of nine men at the Greenwood Senior Center.  The general sense from the meeting was that "there was consensus that men need a community in which to grow relationships." It was decided to form a group to meet this challenge.

The Greenwood Men's Group is dedicated to creating an environment that:

• fosters a strong sense of community,
• promotes relationship-building,
• encourages trust and communication,
• supports physical well-being, and
• facilitates personal growth among older men.

We offer a wide variety of activities designed to appeal to the varying interests of our diverse group. 

The group started out with about a half dozen men and has gradually expanded to a present membership of 46 men, aged 50-90 years old. 

Why This Site Was Created

This site was developed for two basic reasons.

1)  Provide Additional Connection Among Our Members

A primary purpose of this website is to encourage and strengthen a sense of community among men in the greater Greenwood area and Seattle generally.

However, the group has grown to the point where there isn't enough time during our events for each member to spend enough time with every other member. In addition, not every member attends every event.  So to some extent, we are "ships passing in the night".  This issue slows down the process of developing deep friendships. 

Physical events are good but have become a bottleneck. This site represents a complementary way by which we can achieve our goals.  This is a place where you can find out what's going on, what we're thinking about, get better acquainted with other members, and share something of yourself.

2) Reach Out to the Broader Community

The other purpose is to make ourselves better known in our community, especially to those men who might be interested in participating in our activities but are not aware that we exist.

The city of Seattle has 79,438 males 55 years old and up, which is 11% of the total population.  The population of Greenwood is 17,600, which means there are 1,936 older men in Greenwood. If you add in the neighborhoods within easy traveling distance to the Greenwood Senior Center, the total population is nearly 120,000. This suggests there are 13,200 males over age 55 who could be potential members of the Greenwood Men's Group. (120,000 x 11% = 13,200).

Given that there are now 46 members of our men's group, 0.35%% of the potentially 9,500 eligible males are in our group. What about the remaining 99.65%? Are they just not interested in what our group has to offer?  Or is it that they have never heard of us? 

We suspect the latter, i.e., nearly all the older men who reside in our area do not know that we exist. We seek to close this yawning awareness gap.

However, this site is not owned or operated by these organizations.  Neither the GSC nor PNA are responsible in any way for the content on this site. 

Content of the site is created by men's group volunteers.  The sole purpose of the site is to serve our members and help the group fulfill its purpose. 

The costs of this site are borne solely by contributions from group members.
