Upcoming Events - Greenwood Men's Group

December 8: "Show and Tell" meeting, 2pm, GSC

What do you have that we haven't seen before -- or that we don't know about? Is there something of personal significance that you could share with us -- and the story behind it?

This is a different way for us to get to know each other at a deeper level.

Some examples of what you might share:

  • Keepsakes and Mementos: Souvenirs from past travels, a collection of vintage concert tickets, an old military uniform, or an antique manual.
  • Heirlooms or family objects: A pocketwatch, an antique tool, or a piece of jewelry with a personal history.
  • Artifacts of achievement: An item that represents a personal milestone, like a trophy or a memento from a special event.
  • Old photographs: A photo from a significant moment.
  • A tool or object related to a hobby: Something from your favorite pastime, like a fishing lure,, a handcrafted item, or special tool you used.
  • Unique/Historical items: A piece of the Berlin Wall, a rare book, or something with an interesting historical anecdote attached.
  • A collector's item: Something from your personal collection -- coins, stamps, comic books, etc.
  • Favorite book or piece of  music: What is your all-time favorite or one that changed your perspective?
  • A vehicle: The story behind your favorite car or one you drove for a long time.
  • Kitsch: Any art, object, or design that is in poor taste due to its excessive sentimentality, gaudiness, or cheapness, often while trying to imitate something of higher quality.
  • Humorous Item: Something that has a humorous story behind it.

NOTE: Even if you have nothing to share, we hope you'll show up and discover something interesting about your friends. We will also need your input about a special event later this month.

Richard will be facilitating this meeting. Below are just a few examples -- surely you have something even more unusual or interesting!

December 15: Discussion Meeting, "Oz Perlman" TED talk, 2pm, PNA

If you want to stay warm and comfy today, and do something entertaining, this for you.

We'll have an amazing and unbelievable TED talk presentation with discussion afterwards. It will be about Oz Pearlman, "the world's greatest mentalist".

Oz Pearlman is a mentalist, magician, and endurance athlete who gained national recognition after placing third on season 15 of "America's Got Talent". He is known for his ability to read people and perform mind-reading feats, though he clarifies that this is not due to supernatural powers but rather a learned skill based on psychology, suggestion, and influence. Beyond his performances for celebrities and Fortune 500 companies, he is also the author of "Read Your Mind: Proven Habits for Success from the World's Greatest Mentalist".

December 16: Movie, "Big Night", 2pm, PNA

movie big night

Big Night is a 1996 American comedy-drama film co-directed by Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci.[3] Set in the 1950s on the Jersey Shore, the film follows two Italian immigrant brothers, played by Tucci and Tony Shalhoub, as they host an evening of free food at their restaurant in an effort to allow it to gain greater exposure. The film's supporting cast includes Minnie Driver, Ian Holm, Isabella Rossellini, and Allison Janney.[3]

Produced by David Kirkpatrick and Jonathan Filley for the Samuel Goldwyn Company, Big Night was met with largely positive reviews and grossed $14 million worldwide. It was nominated for the "Grand Jury Prize" at the Sundance Film Festival and the "Grand Special Prize" at the Deauville Film Festival. Scott and Tucci won the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best New Director. Tucci and Joseph Tropiano won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.

December 20: Volunteering -- Carkeek Work Party, 9am - Noon, Carkeek Park

Have an interest in volunteering? Here's a possibility.

Some of us have been talking about our group "adopting" a local park, by volunteering to improve it on a relatively consistent basis, perhaps a few times a year. One idea is to link up with the Green Seattle Partnership by providing manpower to help them with reforestation of our local parks, either Woodland Park or Carkeek Park.

We tried this once before in July at Woodland Park. Two of our members showed up to volunteer. Our efforts vastly improved the area we worked on. It's amazing what a group of focused individuals can accomplish in a short time!

This time, we'll turn our attention to Carkeek Park. The Green Seattle Partnership is looking for volunteers. "Join other enthusiastic volunteers for a fun morning of forest restoration and trails maintenance. We have a wide variety of tasks you can help with. Adults and teenagers welcome."

This is only 3 hours out of your busy life. You get to beautify Carkeek Park, meet some new people, get some fresh air and exercise, enjoy the natural surroundings -- what's not to like?

Register with the Green Seattle Partnership to volunteer or get more information.

December 22: "Family Feud" Meeting, 2pm, GSC

You absolutely must show up for this! It will be nothing like you've ever experienced before.

You'll discover how much the other guys know about our locale, and about fellow group members. Also -- everyone else will find out how much you know.

We'll have teams of 3-5 guys who will compete to correctly(??) answer "Family Feud" type of questions.

The winning team gets an all-expenses-paid 10 day vacation in Tahiti. Well, OK, not quite. But, almost as good, it's rumored you will get a gift certificate for the 74th St Ale House

Richard will be our Emcee.  Will it be something like this (below)?

WHERE: Greenwood Senior Center, 525 N 85th St. (downstairs)

January 5: Pickleball + Cornhole, LHCC, 2pm

You have your choice of the following:

  • Pickleball.
  • Cornhole.
  • Working out in the gym.
  • Shooting some baskets.
  • Conversation upstairs?

You can also hang out on the sidelines and catch up with your friends. Or, move upstairs to a quiet room for conversation.

WHERE: Loyal Heights Community Center, 2101 NW 77th St. Pickleball is inside on the basketball court.

January 6 (Tuesday): Breakfast Group, 9:30am

Join us for our monthly Men's Breakfast chat and chew! Come on out and discover what's going on with the other guys, or tell us an amazing story about your past or what's going on with you right now. Or, bring up a topic of the day.

WHERE: We don't know yet.

January 6: Collaboration Team meeting, 2pm, GSC

Want to have a voice in deciding what GMG will be doing in the future? Come to our meeting and share what's on your mind.

If you're involved in a micro group, we especially would like to see you to hear about your plans.

January 12: "What Lies Ahead for You in 2026?" Discussion, 2pm, GSC

2026 is the next year of your finite life.  What do you think is likely to happen? What do you want to happen? What is your mindset going forward? Any fears or constraints? Any dreams of something unique or amazing?

We'll do two things: Recap the events of 2025, and contemplate our future.  This is a timely opportunity to share your thoughts with the group, and to hear what your friends have to say.

Bill will be our facilitator.

WHERE: Greenwood Senior Center, 525 N 85th St. (downstairs)

January 26: Live Demo of Artificial Intelligence, 2pm, GSC

Want to see creative artificial intelligence in action, right before your eyes? This will be a group effort, so it's helpful if you can attend.

Alan is adept at creating songs from scratch, using artificial intelligence. We will spontaneously collaborate on a "Greenwood men's group song."

We'll solicit lyrics from the group, then compose a totally realistic song in minutes. Don't like it? We'll change the lyrics in minutes and presto!, a better song will be generated.

You will be astounded -- and proud -- at the result. Could it make the Billboard Hot 100? With AI, anything is possible.

WHERE: Greenwood Senior Center, 525 N 85th St. (downstairs)

February 9: "Perspectives on Your Upcoming Death" Discussion, 2pm, GSC

As each day goes by, we're one day closer to The End. How many more days do you have? 500? 5,000? 10,000?

Whatever your number is, do you have any thoughts or feelings about dying?

According to the research, men over age 65 generally view their own death as a natural and inevitable part of life, often with less fear and more acceptance compared to younger adults. Many express little anxiety about death itself, although some still experience concerns about the process of dying, such as fear of pain, loss of dignity, or becoming a burden to others.

Do you feel the same way? Or do you have a different perspective? Let's meet and talk it over.

In today's meeting, you'll view a Death Cafe video to set up our discussion. You'll also receive useful information to help you prepare and wisely come to terms with your finality.

Rich will be our facilitator.
