Men's Group Discussion Meetings

The Greenwood Men's Group usually has 1-2 discussion meetings each month. A topic is selected and then we spend the meeting talking about it.  It's been a great way for us to know each other better, using the topic as a springboard for discussion.

What's Your Discussion Topic?

Below is a list of some topics group members have suggested we talk about.  We have a topics committee that chooses the next topic for discussion.

  • How did the pandemic affect you?
  • Is there a recent or even not so recent death that has had an impact on you?
  • Stories of our fathers.
  • Do you or did you have brothers? What was that like?
  • What parts of your present life do you enjoy the most?
  • What's the biggest challenge you're facing in your life right now?
  • What's the most unusual/interesting/outrageous/creative/dumbest thing you ever done?
  • What are you most proud of? Or, what are the top 3 accomplishments so far in your life?
  • What are your plans for the rest of this year?
  • What's your fondest memory?
  • What is your abiding or favorite interest, hobby or endeavor?
  • What was the most interesting place you have ever lived or traveled to?
  • Tell us a little about your career or work life?  What did you do, and what was your experience of it? 
  • Armchair travels. If you were to go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
  • Children?  What's the nature of your relationship with your children?
  • Who is the most important person(s) in your life (if there is one)?  What's the nature of your relationship?
  • Mentor. Did you have a mentor or person who shaped your life? What did you learn? How do you mentor others?
  • Remembering Dad. Nature of your relationship with your father.
  • Being a father - what was it like? Most difficult moment as a father? Greatest moment of joy as a father? Acknowledging the guilt of things gone wrong and letting it go.
  • What's the best thing that has happened to you so far this year?
  • What, if anything, captures your interest these days?  Hobbies, family, politics, reading, any interest at all.
  • Share your best book or book you have read recently. What did you like or dislike about it? How did it affect you? Or, what is your all-time favorite book?
  • Your all-time favorite vehicle that you drove, and why?
  • For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
  • Your Secrets? A couple of years ago I came across one on friendship. One of the findings that struck me was about what was key if one wanted not only a strong friendship, but also a long lasting one. The key:  that deep secrets be exchanged.  Scott 5/22/23
  • Your favorite car? What's the story behind it?
  • Dealing with hearing loss as you age.
  • What is your favorite hobby?
  • Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
  • What would constitute a perfect day for you?
  • When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?
  • Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?
  • Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.
  • What was your childhood like? Your hometown?  If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?
  • Tell your life story in as much detail as possible.
  • If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or ability, what would it be?
  • Is there something that you’ve dreamt of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?
  • What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?
  • What do you value most in a friendship?
  • What is your most treasured memory? What is your most terrible memory?
  • If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?
  • What does friendship mean to you?
  • What roles do love and affection play in your life?
  • How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?
  • How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?
  • Complete this sentence “I wish I had someone with whom I could share…”
  • When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
  • What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?
  • Most interesting book you've read recently?
  • Describe a critical decision or event in your life that caused you to go in a certain direction in your life vs. another, different direction.  That is, a decision or event that led you so far down a path that you never went back to try the other path.  You can think of it as a life-changing decision or event.  What was it, and what difference did it make in your life?
  • What do you do to take care of your physical and mental health? What is your biggest health challenge?
  • If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven’t you told them yet?
  • Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?
  • Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?
  • What role does spirituality play in your life?
  • What do you value most?
  • Who is/are your hero/heroes & why?  
  • What amazes you?  
  • What’s your favorite _____   (let each one of us fill in the blank)?  
  • If you could change something about our world/your life today, what would it be ?
  • Fraud. AARP, The Seattle Times and the IRS have all been doing a lot of coverage dealing with fraud issues for seniors.  Could be an interesting topic.  Their coverage could be used, and I've done a session for the GSC tech support group on protecting yourself from fraud.
  • Cars. What cars have you owned? What were your favorites and why?
  • Hobbies. What were your hobbies as a kid, as an adult? What did you do for fun and pure enjoyment? And what are you doing now? How have your hobbies changed as you grew older? How have your hobbies influenced your career or your life?
  • What role has war or the military played in your life?
  • What is your guilty pleasure?
  • What annoys you the most?
  • If you could live your life over, is there anything you would do differently?
  • What makes someone beautiful/charming/interesting to you?
  • Strengths and weaknesses. What are my most important strengths? What are my most glaring weaknesses?
  • What about me gives me the most pride?
  • What about me gives me the most discomfort, embarrassment, etc.? (not in relation to anyone else)
  • What are my greatest fears?
  • Who am I?  I am…
  • How can we improve our environment or our society?
