Amateur Radio, Boats

by Rich Werner
(Seattle, WA US)

I've had my "ham" license since I was 13 years old. I am not currently active, but really enjoyed using CW (morse code) as a mode of communication. Just got out an electronic keyer that I built 50+ years ago, and it still works.

My wife and I bought an old 32' wood boat in 1998. At the time it was 26 years old. We had never owned a boat and knew nothing about boating. It was a steep learning curve, that continues to this day, but we still enjoy having a boat.

Boat
by: Roger Willsie

I have had some boating experience in the Seattle area. I once borrowed a sailboat from someone I worked with. I wasn’t that skilled and ran the boat aground in shallow water when the tide went out. It was embarrassing because I had two of my teenage children. No damage ensued as we played on the beach until the tide returned and refloated the boat.

Rich's Boat Is a Wonder to Behold
by: Bill

I don't know how good of a sailor Rich is, but have you seen the varnish finish on his boat? Flawless, a true work of art. If you've ever had to re-varnish the woodwork on a boat, you know what an arduous task that is.

Rich hosted the group on his boat after our Heron walk a couple of years ago. Not only does Rich run a tight ship, he is also a gracious host (free drinks!).

In this modern age of satellite, digital communication, etc., it's refreshing to know that there are still a few HAM operators out there. I have a friend on Whidbey who recently got a license and put up his (huge?) antenna.

I have no idea what a homemade "electronic keyer" would look like, so I hope Rich will bring it in to a future meeting.
